These terms cover the Wakanai iPhone app and this website. By using the app you agree to them. If you buy the Conversations subscription, the subscription section below applies too.

The app

• Your license: Wakanai grants you a personal, non-transferable license to use the app to learn Japanese. Don't copy, resell, or redistribute the app or its content, and don't try to break, overload, or reverse-engineer the service.
• Our content: the illustrations, subtitles, translations, vocabulary data, and word audio in lessons are original content created by us. Episode audio is not ours: it streams from the podcast publisher's own public feed, the way any podcast app plays it, with attribution shown in every lesson. The podcast remains its creator's work under their terms.
• No accounts: there is nothing to sign up for. Your learning history lives on your iPhone — see the privacy policy for exactly what leaves the device.

The Conversations subscription

• What it is: spoken conversation practice with Toro, an AI character, offered as an auto-renewable subscription (monthly or annual). Prices are shown in the App Store at the moment of purchase, in your local currency.
• Free trial: new subscribers get a 7-day free trial, once. If you don't cancel before the trial ends, the subscription starts and your Apple Account is charged.
• Renewal & cancellation: payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel anytime in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
• Refunds: purchases are processed by Apple, and refunds are handled through Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com).
• Restoring: use "Restore purchases" on the Conversations screen on any device signed into the same Apple Account.
• Fair use: the subscription includes a generous daily conversation allowance — far more than anyone practices in a day — as a safety valve against abuse. If you somehow reach it, conversations resume the next day.
• Availability: conversations need an internet connection and our conversation service. We work to keep it available but can't promise uninterrupted service; scheduled scenarios and features may change as the product grows.

AI-generated content

Toro's replies are generated by AI, constrained to your vocabulary and the scenario. They are a language-learning aid: they can be imperfect, occasionally wrong, and are not professional translation, advice, or a substitute for a human teacher. Grading of your speech is done by software and is honest but not infallible.

Acceptable use

Don't use Conversations to attempt to generate unlawful or abusive content, to harass, or to probe or disrupt the service. Conversation text is retained briefly for abuse review as described in the privacy policy; we may suspend access to the conversation service for violations of these terms.

The usual legal part

• As is: the app and service are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind to the maximum extent permitted by law.
• Liability: to the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim related to the app or subscription is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
• Apple: these terms are between you and Wakanai, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms with the right to enforce them.
• Changes: if these terms change materially, this page changes and the effective date above is updated. Continuing to use the app after a change means the new terms apply.
